Savon
(based on the book “The Handmade Soap Book”, melida coss)
1 - weight out the base fats, oils and beeswax (if required), using either ounces or grams, but not both.
2 - place these ingredients un a stainless steel or enamel pan over a low heat until melted. Turn off the heat and leave until the oils reach approximately 130° F (54,4° C), stirring intermittently.
3 - weight out the sodium hydroxide (caustic soda - lye) and water.
4 - pour the sodium hydroxide granules into the water and stir until dissolved. Leave until the temperature settles at about 130° F (54,4° C). Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Take care not to inhale the fumes.
5 - Add the sodium hydroxide solution to the fats and stir carefully.
6 - Stir intermittently until the mixture thickens to the point where you can trickle some soap off the back of a spoon and it will leave a trace line on the surface of the mixture. This is called “trace”.
7 - Add the colouring and essential oils as required.
8 - Stir and then pour the mixture into the greased mould.
9 - Cover the soap with a towel of blanket and leave to set for 24h or until hard. Wearing a pair of rubber gloves, turn the soap out of the mould and cut into bars. Cover the soap with a blanket to insulate it and leave to cure for four weeks before use.
The recipe for vegetarian/vegan soap produces quite a soft soap. Produces 1lb (454g) batches - env. 5 soaps.
16 oz (454g) vegetable fat (shortening)
2 oz (57g) sodium hydroxide (caustic soda - lye)
5 oz (142g) water
Grease a square or oblong mould. Follow the basic method just described. It will take about 30 min to reach trace. Add 1 tbsp (15g) of your favourite essential oils if you wish to use them and stir well. Pour the mixture immediately into the mould and cover with a towel or blanket. Leave to set for 24h or until the soap reaches a solid consistency. Wearing rubber gloves, remove the soap from the mould. Cut the soap into bars at this stage, the cover the soap and let it cure for four weeks before use.
